Spring Update

theslats March 4th, 2010

Coming up soon is the St. Patrick’s Day Party on Sunday afternoon, March 14th at 1 PM (1300 for you Europeans and military types) at the New Sweden Hall. The club will supply the beer and Wolf is making his world famous Corned Beef. Please bring along something to share. There will be a small fee at the door ($5 ?).

This is a good event to bring along friends who would like to join our group.

Upcoming events:

Wolf and Robin have graciously agreed to host us at the brewery for a “brew day” in April. This is a good opportunity to learn how to brew at home. Those of us who brew will haul our equipment to the brewery and brew up a batch. All you have to do is show up and jump in.

We would like to put those of you who are home brewers (or were) that have equipment that you are no longer using together with people who are getting started to help them along. Send us a note if you have things to list. We have one request for bottles! We can all help with that one.

Holiday Party

theslats January 7th, 2010

The Christmas/New Year Season is not over yet!  Please come attend the High Desert Brewers Holiday Party at the Riverdale Grange (5990 South 45 West) on Saturday, January 9th at 6:30 pm until Carl kicks us out.  Annual dues will be collected ($20.00/Individual or $25.00/couple) and serve as your entrance fee to the party.  The club will be providing ham, so please bring a dish to share.  The party agenda/activities will include the now-traditional white elephant gift exchange; raffles; a prize for the wildest Christmas/holiday sweater worn, and the annual elections.

As a reminder for those who have participated in the gift exchange in the past and for those first-timers, the white elephant gift is an item that is found in the home that you no longer want/need.  It could be a nice/new item that was given to you that you don’t want and are re-gifting or it could be something that has been used but no longer serves a purpose for you (you know, the old one man’s trash is another man’s treasure idea).  The idea is to be creative and have fun. Each person that wants to participate in the exchange should bring one white elephant gift.

We look forward to seeing you Saturday!

Holiday tasting Reminder

theslats December 2nd, 2009

Greetings all,

Hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving, which means that Christmas is just around the corner.  So, in preparation for this, the HDBA will be hosting a seasonal beer tasting at the Idaho Brewing Company (Courtesy of Leon and Robin) on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm.  Although some beverages will be provided, feel free to bring a bottle of your favorite seasonal brew to share if you would like and or a tasty afternoon snack to accompany the beer.

theslats May 11th, 2009

Number 1 – Robin and Leon have opened the door to the new Idaho Brewing Company. The tasting room is open on Thurs, Fri, and Sat 4pm til 9ish.
Congratulations, The club will support your efforts!

Number 2 – Please email myself back quickly, mccallbri (at) msn (dot) com, if you would like to go to Victor/Driggs next weekend. Saturday May 16th we will leave Idaho Falls around 2:00 pm and return around 9:00 pm. The Grand Teton Brewing Company will give us a private tour, then we can visit the new Wildlife brewing Company, and possibly make it to Tony’s Pizza which has over 30 beers on tap. Cost for the bus ride will be $15. Food, beer, and misc. is your responsibility.
Got canceled, not enough people responded.

Number 3 – Looking for Volunteers for the Mountain Brewers Beer Fest, June 6th 11:00 am to when the work is done. Some of you know the drill, but for our new members… we pour beer, lots of beers, all day long. Some brewers donate product, but do not have the staff to send to the fest. We step in and help dispense and promote their products. It is a very long day, but the rewards are great. Please email myself, mccallbri@msn.com, if you would like to help.

Number 4 – Gregg is putting together a trip to Italy in the fall.

Florence, Oct 30 – 2 nights Much to do in Florence (Domo (cathedral), David, Uffuzi, Ponte Vecchio) , etc. and on way out could stop in Pisa for the afternoon – more on that later if you are interested.

Santa Margherita Ligure, Nov 1 – 3 nights This is the southern end of the Italian Riviera, not far from La Spezia, Cinque Terra, Porto Fino and Genoa (Genoa is where some guy who is celebrated on October 12th was born)

Milan, Nov 4 – 3 nights From here can visit Lake Como, you can also do a day trip to Verona (you know, where two gentlemen are from.)

Working on details but need to know who is interested at this point so we can get quotes.

Holiday Party

HDBA December 4th, 2008

Hi all, hope you had a nice Thanksgiving,

Here’s the scoop on the Holiday Party.  As we did last year, the party formerly known as the Christmas Party will be moved to January.  This is necessary for a number of reasons the biggest being scheduling.  This will in no way diminish the fun and frivolity.

We plan to have the usual good eats, beer, of course, music, raffle, and the gift exchange.  You now have a method of trading off that not so great gift you got for Aunt Wilma for a chance at something much better.  Bring a gift with you, not too expensive, nice or funny to take part in the fun.  You will enjoy watching the hoping and scheming and surprise that goes on. We will endeavor to get Santa back from his post-Christmas vacation to officiate the proceedings.

This is also the official election of officers.  Bring your ideas for next year’s activities.  We need some folks to take the lead on organizing some of the outings (i.e. golf, picnic, trips).   This is a great time to bring in new members.

More details to come.

We all hope that you have a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year,

Bob, Gregg, Lisa, Frank, Brian, Carl, Dan, Rochelle, boB, Wolf, Robin, Donna, and Matt

PS Make sure all of your friends know.  We are still working out the email problems.

Events update

HDBA July 16th, 2008

Hope you’re having a fine and fun summer. We would like to add to your enjoyment with a few activities.

Here’s what’s on Tap:

July 31 -Start of the beer judge exam class. This class will prepare you to take the BJCP Exam in October. The class will concentrate on beer evaluation and answer questions on the assigned reading from the BJCP web site. The classes will be at the Riverdale Grange and possibly other locations.

MANY OF YOU HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN THE CLASS. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, PLEASE SENT ME A NOTE SO I CAN PLAN EVEN IF YOU HAVE TALKED TO ME (I have CRS).

August 14 -“Baseball! Thursday night, 7:15, at the ball park. We provide a ticket, a hot dog, and, of course, a beer for all paid members. We need to know how many of you are coming no later than July 31 (sooner is better). [Kathy and I will be there Frank] this is always a good time.

August 31 -Eastern Idaho State Fair Home-brew Competition This is a call for judges, stewards, and entries. WE ALSO NEED AN ORGANIZER. Send me a note with any questions. Folks taking the exam class will be invitedto judge and/or steward as part of your training.

September -“ Date TBD, golf and picnic. We are planning a golf (and I use the term loosely) tournament at Cedar Park. Goofy golf and/or miniature golf so we can all participate. Go to http://www.cedarparkgolf.com/ for info. Stay tuned.

October 25 – BJCP exam. The exam is open to all but I suggest you take the review class. There is a $50 fee for first time exams and $30 for retakes. Take the class and save up your exam fee.

October 31 -“Halloween Party! Details to follow.

December 12 -“Christmas Party We are returning to the traditional Christmas party. Some folks missed Santa and we all missed the gift exchange. Details later.

Guest Speakers -“ We have been thinking about inviting some beer industry luminaries to regal us with stories and wisdom. If you know of someone you would like to have speak or know of someone who would like to speak let us know.

If you would like to help out on any or all of these events drop us a line.

Hope to see you soon,

Cheers,

Bob
